1949 OLDSMOBILE 98 CONVERTIBLE -- The best of the UC Berkeley cars was this great looking Olds bought in 1957.  The owner had been drafted into the service. He had to report the next day after I came by to look at the car, so he accepted $425, every cent I had.  In fact, he had to loan me $5 for gas so I could make it back to the dorms.

1949 OLDSMOBILE -- This car had horrible brakes.  With a 4700 lb. weight, unvented wheel covers, fender skirts, small drum brakes and no intermediate gear selection, brake fade almost killed Donna and I descending Fish Ranch Road in Berkeley.  Only a panicky shift into low range, a clear road and an uphill driveway saved us.
